Being a Part of Something Bigger Than Yourself

Back in Seattle, a good friend of mine and a co-president of the Emerald City Supporters, Greg Mockos, often likes to talk about being a part of something bigger than yourself. This is very well put as to me it is the essence of team sports. Maybe often more so for the supporters than the players or club officials, but in TamU-K the idea applies across the club more than in most other clubs. Today I had a chance to witness another confirmation of this spirit as I saw our F9 boys play a couple of futsal matches in the morning.

Just seeing a group of boys play under the TamU-K identity is great, and when they finished their pre-match huddle by shouting ”TamU-K!” I felt it. The biggest surprise came when they scored 1-0 in the second match against LeKi-futis though, as the four boys on the bench broke out into song to the tune of Jingle Bells: ”Sininen, vihreä, sinivihreä, meidän oma TamU-K on Suomen ykkönen, hei!” Translated it goes like this: ”Blue, green, blue-green, our own TamU-K is Finland’s number one, hey!” Now, it may be a coincidence that they chose these words, but singing about their own TamU-K is exactly what our club is about.

The results were again very positive and the team remains unbeaten. The first match against TPV was the tougher one, but a second-half equalizer secured a 1-1 draw. Then the second match against LeKi-futis was at first almost too easy with two early goals. The half-time score was 3-0, but in the second half LeKi scored twice and had several chances for an equalizer. Still, the 3-2 win sets a good example for the first team who also face LeKi-futis in the important Finnish Cup fixture on Monday night. And I do mean night, as the match starts at 10.30 pm.
